Pirates before Christ

By Agnete Vestergaard-Kristensen

Vilnius, Lithuania: Everywhere you turn in Vilnius, a church is in sight. 41 churches in total and many of these located in the beautiful Old Town, one of the largest surviving medieval old towns in Central Europe. Pre-dating the country’s conversion to Christianity by seven decades, Vilnius’ oldest surviving church was built in 1320 by German merchant immigrants. Alongside this gothic style church, also Baroque and Rococo speers, golden Russian-Orthodox rooftops and charming little chapels dominate the view of the city.

And the churches are nowhere near empty. In fact many of these are now used for multiple modern day purposes such as concerts and exhibitions. Düsseldorf symphony Orchestra guested the University Church; St. John’s and interpreted musical compositions from around the world.
